Happiness

In life it's so easy to get bogged down by everything. If you're wondering why that statement is so vague, stay with me. I feel like it's so easy to get caught up in the gory details of every single event in life that you lose sight of the overall goal -- happiness. As easy as it is to get caught up in details, it's just as easy to view those details in a negative light. Obviously everything in life can be improved upon. You can improve your relationships, improve your career, improve your nutrition/health, etc. By the time you get done listing all that you want to improve upon in life, you lose sight of what you've already accomplished. Not only that, but you forget to be excited about your future. You forget that even though you have all these things that you wish were happening now, the fact that they're part of your future is just plain exciting. The unknown IS exciting.

So that's my current goal -- to focus on being excited for the future and focus less on minute and possibly negative details that take away from that excitement.

Here's to the next chapter!

Music for the Soul

I can't sleep. What better time for a blog posting, right?

Tonight's rant/enlightenment will focus on music. I've been taking in, reading about, and anticipating good music all day today. In my car, I've been listening to some arguably "low quality" current R&B tunes. Why do I like them, you ask? They take my mind off the stresses of the day at hand and allow me to dance it out. Yes folks ... I dance in my car. It's probably more like swaying and tapping the steering wheel harder than I should (safety first), but yes, dancing nonetheless.

Anyway, then I got home and listened to some pop country while doing some computer work. This particular artist's voice isn't really the best, but it's soft and soothing. I can do some pretty quality thinking with soothing country background tunes keeping me awake and entertained. Later on, I watched "American Idol." There are some things I don't like about the show (i.e. drama with judges, stupid auditions, and fake celebrity critiques), but sometimes I catch a moment during the show where someone just has that "spark." The realization that this is a show based on ratings and politics falls away and I'm struck by the raw talent a contestant belts out to the world.

"American Idol" puts me in the mood for quality voices. Let me just stray for a second and say that there's good music that doesn't involve quality voices. I used to be against music like this because I was under the impression that a requirement for good music was a good voice or voices. It turns out that there's more to musicality than quality vocal skills, though. That said, I can't get enough of powerfully clear voices that give you goosebumps and make you smile uncontrollably. I almost feel too girly admitting that, but there's something about a good voice that just resonates in your soul.

I am now continuing my "American Idol" buzz by listening to a former "AI" contestant and subsequent winner -- Carrie Underwood. I don't absolutely love all of her songs, but "So Small" is a perfect example of a great performer just belting out the lyrics to a powerful song.

Oh, and I almost forgot the "reading about" part of my musical day! I was glancing through an Austin guidebook seeing what the area had to offer, and as most people know it's often times referred to as the "Live Music Capital." That, of course, made me yearn for some good live music and a laid-back carefree atmosphere filled with a fun spirit.

Now that I've written all of this, I'm not entirely sure what the point of this posting is other than music is such an important part of life, and I guess you could say I consider it one of life's miracles.

GO LISTEN.

Horoscopes (Do Not) Rock My World

I can't sleep. Therefore, I feel the need to add to my world of nothing. What's the one thing that encompasses the word "nothing" to the fullest? Facebook, of course! I've decided to quote one Facebook status per entry and make random remarks on that choice for no particular reason. Good idea, eh? I thought so. So, here goes today's status message of choice (authors shall remain anonymous):

"For lent this year i'm going to give up not using facebook. Let's see how this goes, I predict falling flat on my face"

Just kidding. I'm not desperate enough to give my random thoughts about a Facebook status remarking on Facebook. Geez. Okay, how about this?

"My horoscope today said to "Get out and flirt a little today and Party on!" Ok! :)"

This status message is perfectly fine, if you ask me. However, horoscopes are a load of crap. How do I know that? I wrote them for my high school newspaper. That's right -- I wrote them. Am I psychic? No. Do I believe that astrological and zodiac signs point to certain characteristics? Not really.

Horoscopes are so general that each one could apply to each and every individual in the world without a glitch. Each horoscope could feasibly come true to each and every individual in the world each month. Is that enough "each"es for you?! Anyway, this is clearly an obvious statement, but come on, people! I actually get supreme enjoyment out of reading horoscopes as much as the next girl, but do I take them to heart whatsoever? Absolutely not. Do I forget them the instant after I read them? Absolutely. Do I think everyone else should do the same? Yes!

I guess horoscopes, zodiac meanings, and astrological signs require faith just like religion does, and I'm not really one to criticize people for believing in such things. However, I will say that I just do not understand it at all. Perhaps it's just my scientific mentality coming in to play. Proof is needed, folks! Enough said.

Stay tuned for Random Thoughts on Random Status Messages: Part II.

My "Avatar" Review

Okay, I have officially decided to write in both of my blogs:

http://www.xanga.com/jessi32084 (this one)

and

http://www.jessicaderubbo.com/blog

Why, you ask? I got sick of just writing about SOMETHING and need to write about NOTHING, too. Sometimes you just need a good random topic to blab about, you know?

So, let's see ...

I recently saw the movie "Avatar" and came to two interesting (to me) conclusions.

(1) Apparently I DO like alien movies (at least the ones where humans are the aliens).
(2) I'm sick and tired of every movie turning out to be a commentary on society.

Actually, those two conclusions kind of go together now that I think about it. Anyway, the movie is basically about human greed and the lengths people will go to attain power (aka: $$$). It's also a commentary on the "cycle of life" so to speak, in that every living thing is connected and therefore, say, killing off a species is not the best idea because it would then affect something else within the ecosystem.

Now what I want to know is why I can't just go see a movie without having to think about these serious issues. I mean, I guess in a way all movies are commentaries on human existence, but this one could not have been more obvious. The fact that I even came up with what the movie was getting at proves that point because I'm that person who refuses to read into a film because I would much rather just take it at face value and leave it at that.

Don't get me wrong: I really liked the movie. I simply don't want to feel like smoking pot and/or killing myself post-viewing. Got it?! Okay, good.

Thanks for stopping by...

I'm pretty sure that very few people are reading this anymore, but for those of you that are, I have started a new blog. It turns out I have run out of nothing to say and have now decided to embark on the world called "something."
